The cast is quite impressive, featuring Will Smith, Gene Hackman, Jon Voight, Lisa Bonet, and Barry Pepper. However, the writing's a little weak and over-the-top with its complicated plots and broad characterizations. Yet there's a bit of fun to the madcap adventure, and the action scenes are shot especially well. Exciting and full of thrills, Enemy of the State is an entertaining popcorn film. Super Reviewer May 06, 2012 Enemy of the State is a Tony Scott vehicle compared to a Will Smith vehicle. Smith is supported by Gene Hackman who is essentially replaying a role from The Conversation which has a similar premise of people using their power to intrude on our privacy. Tony Scott allows the film to flow and it's a strong film for Smith who was still in the early days of his career. The films plot is even more relevant today as it was on release. The set pieces are relentless and the pacing is incredible to watch. There's very little breathing time. Tony Scott has had mixed career with films but this is easily one of the best thrillers of the era. There's a wave of then unknown character actors who would later move on to bigger things. Enemy of the State is a great action thriller that came out when the Touchstone Pictures label was pumping out incredible films. I had hoped to see this on 4k but much like blu ray it's a slow process waiting. Still looks great upscaled on 4k and it's nice to watch a film that's not a comic book movie. 20/07/2020 May 03, 2012 A very smart and intelligent thriller that is definitely worth a watch. Will Smith is very good in a serious role and carries the convictions and emotions of his character with sheer charisma. The story is very clever and always has an unexpected little twist here and there with a very clever ending scene. The stunts and action scenes are brilliant and show how technology really can carry the advantage. The chases with Will against highly trained 'soldiers' and smart Teckies is brilliant and delivers some high octane thrills and suspense. Even though the running time seems long I assure you it goes quickly because you are so captivated by the 'one man against the world plot' that you are eager for whatever comes next. This has a very interesting premise that has a variety of positives under it's belt to carry the weight and serves well as a very unique conspiracy tale. Overall a smart and interesting thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. Super Reviewer
